File Corrupt inspect.sys

I was able to boot windows vista for the first time on installation.

However, when I tried afterwards, I have got this error when I try booting
into it:

File not fount/corrupt: inspect.sys

and then it tells me what I should do to fix the problem (Pop the windows
vista cd in, run recovery, run startup recovery). HOWEVER, the startup
recovery disk cannot even save me on this one. The only way I've managed to
post this is because I have done multi-boot, so I can access my previous
Windows XP. The only thing I've changed so far is put back all my Program
Files back from the Windows.old into their rightful location.

It also keeps saying if I have recently added hardware to the computer, I
should remove it and try rebooting. Unfortunately, I have not added any
hardware. Windows Vista was working perfectly fine last night, the only
problem I had was it not logging off correctly, so my only resort was to push
the power button and switch it off completely.

Can anybody offer any help?

Thanks, vytak.

Vytak,

You were lucky. I couldn't even boot up the first time. So, I figured if I
took out the CD, brought it to my desktop, I would then be able to find a CAB
file that has the inspect.sys file and expand it. Once done, I would burn it
to CD, boot the laptop into the Recovery Console (which worked) and copy the
file into the appropriate drivers directory.

But, the Vista installation CD had no CAB files and I couldn't locate
anything anywhere that looked remotely like "inspect". Also, searching
Google and other engines for inspect.sys brought up nothing, including the
Microsoft site. I just Ghosted back to Windows XP.

I will say that a fresh install worked but I'm in no mood to reinstall all
my apps which would take 3 to 4 days.

Oh well.

Myname,

In the end I had to resolve to reinstallation. But thanks for your post
anyways!
