am trying to copy a file across a network onto a shared network drive,
but after the copy (which seems to go fine) the files all appear to be
0kb..
is this a likely sign of dying hardware ? have tried a few times since,
only big files seem to have the problem. never had a problem like this
before (or even heard of one) and nothings changed..

thanx

With what file system is the network drive formatted? How large are your
"big files"? Were you ever able to do this successfully? If yes, what
has changed since that time? And finally, please give some description
of your network setup - computers involved, hardware, etc.

With more details about the problem and your situation, we'll be able to
give you focused troubleshooting help.

Hey,

okay, the network drive is a 500 gig maxtor all fat32, it has a usb
drive attached to it, also fat32 the usb drive is the
one im having problems with. ive attached the usb drive to the laptop
and copied files succesfully. the smallest file that ive had the
problem with (across the network) so far is 500 megs, previously ive
always been able to copy files, big and small across to the drive. the
network is pretty simple, a laptop (my main computer) and a maxtor 500
gig NAS both plugged into a dlink network switch, Ive not experienced
any problems with the maxtor drive, or the usb drive attached to it.
and nothings changed before or since the problem began.

i am suspect that the drive is dying.. but copying a file, it taking
the proper amount of time and the system behaving as if it had
succesfully copied, but leaving a 0kb file is a new one for me..

thanx

So, you have a NAS device which has a usb-enclosed hard drive connected
to it? Is this correct? And it is the usb-enclosed hard drive with
which you are having the problems, not the NAS? Since this all worked
for you before and now it doesn't:

Perhaps the usb enclosure has developed problems. Take the hard drive
out of it and slave it in the desktop and test it with a drive
diagnostic downloaded from the mftr.'s website. If the drive tests bad,
replace it. If the drive tests good, try it in a different,
known-working usb-enclosure with a different usb cable. If it works,
then discard the original enclosure.

If the known-good drive still fails while connected to the NAS with the
new usb-enclosure, then the problem is on the NAS.
