My wifes laptop is having a unique problem. When it boots the loading xp
window is visible but when it goes to the logon or desktop screen the screen
goes blank. I am fairly certain that the video card/chip inside is dead. I
need to know which file contains the resolution for the desktop/logon and
how to adjust it. Her drive is networked so I can edit the file with the
blank screen. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Boot to the Safe Mode and remove the Video card from the Device
Manager. Restart Windows so that the driver is reinstalled.
If this does not help reboot to the Safe Mode and set the video
resolution to a different setting in the Control Panel > Display >
Settings. If video works in the Normal Mode now also the problem may
be caused by the monitor as well as by the video card.
