I am trying to open a .torrent file, previous to my problem it opened
automatically in Utorrent. Now when i go to open a .torrent file Adobe 8
wants to open it with an error that the file may be corrupt. I went into the
control panel and went into the file associations and tried to associate the
..torrent file to Utorrent but it will not change the program from Adobe 8 to
Utorrent. I don't know how else to open it. If I save the .torrent file and
try to open from Utorrent it comes up as an Adobe 8 file and will not open
that way either. Does any one know why I can't change the file associations
or know how I can fix this.
Thank you

If you right-click a .torrent file, is there an Open With > Choose Default
Program option? If so, click on that and browse to the Utorrent
application. Put a check in the box for "Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file".

If that doesn't work, in the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and
expand that key. Find the sub-key named ".torrent". Right-click .torrent,
in the left pane, and choose Delete. Log Off and then back On.
Double-click a .torrent file (the Adobe icon should be gone, replaced by a
generic one), and then use Open With to browse to the Utorrent program
(putting a check in the box for "Always use...").

Right click on the file, Open With, Choose Default Program, browse to the
executable of Utorrent , and make sure the Always open with... checkbox is
checked

You might also want to try opening the Utorrent program, and check out it's
Options/Preferences/Properties. Sometimes the option to make the program
the default application for opening certain kinds of files is in a program's
configuration dialog (and usually configures the name for the file's Type).

You can fix file associations by using certain tools called file extension fixers. Some of them are free like filecure. It scans your computer and identifies the types of files currently installed on it. It then lists any file problems that it finds as well as file types that are currently working as expected. After that,it will fix broken file associations and continue monitoring your computer for any file association changes.
