David

I had a file that had the extension .dat and someone got
on my computer and made the file open with windows media
player. I know how to change the setting so it opens
with a different program, but I don't want that. I want
to change the association of the file back to unknown
like it was. So that the file doesn't open with
anything. Can someone please help me do this.

Thanks

Dave

1.) open regedit from the Run dialog
2.) navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExt
s
3.) delete .dat key or you can rename the reg key
4.) log off and back on

Perfect.

Dave,

The ProgId in the right-pane instructs which application to launch while double-clickng the DAT file.
