File as fields disappeared (blank)!!

A few weeks ago all of the names on my address cards
disappeared. No data was lost, but in both the address
card views and the list views, the "file as" field is
blank (with the exception of one contact, added recently).
Outlook won't allow me to edit this field in a folder
view. If I open the contact, however, the "file as" field
is correct and can be edited. When I close the form, it
still shows up blank in the folder view.

Any newly created contacts show up in the folder view with
blank file as fields.

Using the quick jump keys reveals that the data is
actually null in the folder view and not just invisible
(eg. clicking "a" scrolls me directly to the end of the
list).

If I move the contacts to another mailbox, they show up
correctly, but when I move them back, the "file as" field
goes blank again. The one contact that appeared correctly
in the original mailbox, appears blank in the new mailbox!
I can create new contacts in the new mailbox and they work
correctly.

I've tried many ways to fix this, but have made no
progress.

Thanks,

Doug

Can you remember the steps used to create this problem? We have no reports
yet of its happening for no reason.

I really have no idea what caused this. I think I have a
file corruption problem. About 2-3 months ago I had to
repair my .pst file. I'm trying to export all of my email
and contacts and start over now. When I try to move some
of my mail items I get the following error:

"Can't move the items. Could not complete the operation.
One or more parameter values are not valid."

BTW, I'm using OL 2002 SP-2 on Win XP SP-1.

Maybe I'll upgrade to OL 2003 when I figure out how to
export all of my existing mail.

Have you run the Inbox Repair Tool against your PST file?

Yes.

It reports no errors--a few more folders than I expected
(27), but the correct # of email items (292). I've moved
out thousands of email items, and all of the remaining
ones I can open/read/print, but can't export/move/copy. I
get a "parameter incorrect" or "parameter not valid" error.

You can't create a new PST in the profile and move Contacts into it?
I've seen nothing similar nor any reports of anything similar. Sorry I can't
help.

FYI, this last problem is documented:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;Q273122

I can't move or save as .msg - but I can forward them to
myself. I lose the 'from' and 'received', which are two of
the most important items for organizing my email archive.
Basically I'm SOL.

Thanks for your effort.

Doesn't seem to apply. I was asking about your Contacts, not messages.
Contacts is where the File As fields are created.
