file and record locking

I have a client who uses a DOS mode program in windows
2000 and keeps encountering file and record locking...does
anyone have an answer as to why this would happen
 
I'd imagine that is because the application is putting an exclusive lock on
the recordset. Can you specify a different cursor type in the app?

"Cursor type" in this context is a database term.
Really, why don't you say something about the application? It's name
or the DB engine it uses or, anything. This might not be the correct
newsgroup, but more info. is better. :-)
