I have a small home network of four hosts all running WinXP 3 Home 1 Pro. I
have one laptop (running WInXP Home) which can't see one desktop(running XP
Pro) but that same laptop can see the other hosts. Other hosts can see that
same desktop and the desktop can see that laptop and the other hosts. The
desktop sometimes shows up in Network Neighborhood but if I try and go into
it it complains that I don't have permission. There is a corporate VPN
client installed but I get the same thing without the client being
active/logged on. I've tried editing hosts, lmhosts, etc...double checked
that it is in the same workgroup.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

So you can see "Home" machines but not the one "Pro" machine?
Suspect credentials problem and/or misconfigured XP firewall on the "Pro"
machine.

Are you using a valid username/password for an account on the XP Pro system to
access shares on that system?

Nope, even with XP Firewall turned off I get the same misbehaving. It's
weird because sometimes the icon shows up as part of the Workgroup but then
when I try to open it up it complains about not having access. This is a
simple Workgroup not a Domain...Thanks, Dave

Workgroup or Domain, XP Pro isn't XP Home. If you're not providing a user
account and password when trying to access XP Pro shares, you're not likely to
gain access to said shares...

I'm confused then as to why the other XP Home clients connect just fine.
I've also just discovered that I can't ping the desktop from the problematic
laptop. I've triple-checked the hosts and lmhosts file and the laptop can
ping other hosts in the workgroup, the laptop can ping itself using the IP
address and the desktop can ping the laptop. It seems to be part of the
right Workgroup...

dt can't help without answers to his questions. Let me guess: everyone
is logged on as administrator with null passwords. Right? If not then
what?
