File and print sharing problems

I used to be able to file and print share fine until about two weeks ago.
Now when I try to map a folder from my desktop (X) to my laptop (wanderer) I
get:

Network path was not found

I think this started happening after I disabled my Guest account. I read
that it was needed for file sharing, so I reenabled it on both machines, but
I still have the problem. I am able to map folders from the laptop to the
desktop. I downloaded PChuck's cdiag and ran it on both computers. I have
the WINS server IP pointing to the desktop's IP. The output is below.

My network consists of the desktop hardwired to a router which connects to
the Internet and the laptop wireless to the router.

Console error output from the laptop:

System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

Marc,

You're missing half the point of CDiag - including the names, purposely. One
set of the tests involves checking name resolution, repeatedly.

You would properly code the list of targets:

set FullTarget1=WANDERER 192.168.1.7
set FullTarget2=X 192.168.1.6

Then you get

Full Targets WANDERER 192.168.1.7 X 192.168.1.6 127.0.0.1

The sequence is important, too. Computer Name followed by IP address.
Consistency makes it way easier to read the logs, when the logs are complete.

Try again, please.

Sorry, I fixed the script and here is my post again:

I used to be able to file and print share fine until about two weeks ago.
Now when I try to map a folder from my desktop (X) to my laptop (wanderer) I
get:

Network path was not found

I think this started happening after I disabled my Guest account. I read
that it was needed for file sharing, so I reenabled it on both machines, but
I still have the problem. I am able to map folders from the laptop to the
desktop. I downloaded PChuck's cdiag and ran it on both computers. I have
the WINS server IP pointing to the desktop's IP although I get the same
results with no WINS server on the laptop. The output is below.

My network consists of the desktop hardwired to a router which connects to
the Internet and the laptop wireless to the router. Both machines are XP
home with no personal firewalls running.

console error output from the laptop:

System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

System error 53 has occurred.

OK, Marc, much better.

You have 2 observed errors so far.

First, the 6118 error ("The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available"), shown by Wanderer. Secondly, Wanderer cannot establish a Net View
of X, by name or by address. X, on the other hand, shows no errors.

You're getting name resolution (SMBs port 137 Name) but not browser or session
(SMBs port 138 Datagram or 139 Session). I'm going to bet that you have either
a personal firewall or other security program (anti-virus / anti-worm) on
Wanderer that's a problem.

If nothing there, check for LSP / Winsock / TCP/IP corruption, again on
Wanderer.

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.

I finally figured this one out. You were right it was a firewall problem.
What had me baffled was that I stopped ZoneAlarm months ago. At least I took
it out of the Startup group so I thought it wouldn't start up each time I
booted. Looks like it actually did, it just didn't show that it was running.
When I removed the ZoneAlarm software things worked great.

What appeared to have happened is that when I recently changed to a new ISP
I got a new subnet for my local network. ZoneAlarm had the old subnet and
started blocking file sharing on the new subnet. The strange thing is that
this didn't happen right away. It didn't start until about two week after I
got the new subnet.

Anyhow I solved the problem by reading a post that recommended starting in
safe mode with networking. Then I was able to map drives from the desktop.
This seemed to point to something blocking file sharing on the desktop.

Is ZoneAlarm supposed to work that way, that even when you don't start it
from the Startup group that it still runs on computer startup? The only way
to stop it was to remove the software.

Thanks,
Marc

The ZoneAlarm firewall runs as a service, so it protects you when the computer
is started, not after you login. The ZA component that you removed from Startup
was probably the Control Center, which simply helps you interact with the
service.

What you found was the firewall itself, which is what you needed. And then you
figured out the involvement of the new subnet.

Thanks for letting us know, another mark for Zone Alarm.
