File and folder permissions on Win2K Server

Hi folks,

Can someone please answer a question? My name is Al
Taylor and I am a Netware CNE and CNI, which is almost
useless to me now. I am just now jumping on the Windows
2000 train. My question is this:

I started my own company and I am having trouble with
file and folder permissions. I am working with a small
community school I the area and have setup a small(1 win
2K server, 8 work stations) network for them. The work
stations consist of 4 Win2K Pro machines and 4 XP Pro
machines. I have created a share on the server called
PUBLIC. Within the PUBLIC folder. I have created a folder
for each student called STUDENT1, STUDENT2... ect. I
would like to have each student to be able to see only
their OWN STUDENT folder. The students all belong to a
group called students. I cannot seem to get the mix of
permissions right.

Please point me in the correct direction.

You can either share every students folder and assign it appropriate share permissions (something like Admins: Full control, StudentX: Modify)
or you can share only the upper folder (Public in your case, assign it share permissions (probably Students: Modify) and then assign appropriate NTFS permissions for every student folder (to allow only StudentX user account to access Public\StudentX folder). In this case other students will still be able to see other students' folders but they won't be able to view (or modify) the folder contents.

Let my see if I am understanding you correctly.

I should assign share level permissions to the GROUP called STUDENTS at the PUBLIC folder level and then assign NTFS permissions to each student for only his or her folder within the PUBLIC folder. Is that correct?

I think I was confusing share level permissions with NTFS permissions.
