I have XP home edition
I want to encrypt a file or folder but when I go
Properies ,Advanced , Adnaced Attributes the 'Encrypt
Contents to secure data' box is greyed out, how do I get
this active.

If you are running XP Home:

HOW TO: Set the My Documents Folder as "Private" in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298399

You Cannot Select the "Make This Folder Private" Option
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307286

"The Make this folder private" option requires the NTFS file system.

This is fine, but you should be aware that making a folder private has
two problems:

1. It doesn't prevent the folder/file from being deleted.
2. If you make a folder 'private', any files you subsequently add to
that folder will NOT be private. You'll have to manually perform this
operation on any file added to the folder.

Not to mention that the question was about encryption,
and the built-in encryption is only available using XP
Pro, not Home...

As to your first point though, if someone has physical
access to the machine and the drive, nothing can prevent
a determined person from deleting things off it.

This is true, if they have the know-how, even if it is an NTFS partition.
