File ALREADY OPEN

I have a new WIN2K workstation which seems to either
have caught a cold, or maybe I simply set up
something wrong with my windows TCP/IP, Netbeui
or other cfgs, related user admin, or naming.

Whenever I go to open a word "doc" for instance,
I get a message that "This file is already opened would I
like to save-as, or continue in read-only mode".
Then even when I say to continue, it lets me save it
anyways.
Also, I'm the only one "here". At first I thought it was a
Word97 Macro virus, but then today when I tried to
open a CMD prompt shell, I got the same exact message.
"This file or application is aleady in use"
(You notice that it doesn't identify the "other user")
I have 3 users "setup" on that machine,
"machinename/administrators" and
"machinename/me"
and "guest" is disabled.

There are two other Win2K workstations on this "WorkGroup"
(no domain, just a NAT/DHCP 100BT router/switch,), and one
has
dual boot with a Win98SE partition. (of course the
Win2Ks boot patitions are all NTFS so The dual boot system
cannot "see" the "C" shares on the other 2 machines unless
it too is booted into Win2K.

Dose anyone know how I can check to see if someone outside
the house is actually opening files through my cable modem,
and SMC Barricade "Firewall/NAT router".
OR if the fact there is no authentication server, and
I am logged in as "administrator", while there also eists
an "machinename\administrator" on both of the other Win2K
machines, and I think all three are DIFFERENT passwords,

IS WIN2K trying to authenticate users in a Peer-To-Peer
network, or (unlike NT4), considers all authenticated
users on a "Microsoft Networks" "serveless domain".

Have I accidetaally created a "serverless domain"?

I understand that this a new feature, so you don't have to
buy Win2K Server if you are using 4 or less NT5
workstations.

I know it's a long question, but it makes good reading.
Please anyone with ideas about what is casuing this
tell me about it before I decide to scrub that system.

The bummer is, though I've already "Ghosted" the boot
part on it, I really haven't finished deploying it, I have
about 10 more heavy apps to load and configure before I
make a "permanent Ghost image that will do me any good.

Yesy I've tried inplugging the network from it and
then opening the same word file.

I't like a ghost user, I've experienced a slow down in the
system, which makes me think someine is using it
for broadcastubg, or since me and "myself" are opening and
editing two of everything of course it will seem slower.

Do you have a virus scanner? Would they be opening the files and then not
releasing them fast enough?
