File access denied to home network computer

I just hooked up a wireless router to my desktop so I can run my
laptop from the same internet connection. However, when I set up the
home network to link the two PCs together, the files on my desktop are
not accessible from the laptop. I get an error message saying the
path is incorrect or I may not have authorization. Then I am told to
check with the administrator.

Any ideas on how to make this work so I can access files from my
laptop through the network?

By the way...
On my desktop computer, I have always had an issue with file access
and security settings. If I ever move a file from one folder to
another, I can no longer access the file without messing around with
the security settings.
The problem with this is that my Preferences window has no Security
tab unless I reboot my PC in safe mode. It is a real pain in the
boot! :) I wonder if this issue is related to the lack of access to
files from my networked laptop.
Hmmm...

No, not really. I am only running Windows Service Pack 1 and the only
other firewall I know of is associated with a VPN connection I use
during business hours. If that program is running, then there is a
firewall.
