Field Data types

I am linking external data in access 2000. I keep trying
to link to an .xls spreadsheet. All the data columns are
formatted "number", yet the linking Wizard insists on
importing some of the data as text. Design view won't
allow editing of linked tables. IS there a way around
using the stupid wizard?
