field codes won't hide

I have a Word document with field codes in it, but I can't make the field
codes hide. They show up whether I've toggled Tools Options View Field Code
on or off. This happens to old field codes that have been in the document
for a long time; and to new field codes that I insert for testing.

This is an old file. It was probably automatically converted from at least
one previous version of Word.

Am I right to guess that the file is corrupted somehow? If so, any
suggestion about how to fix it?

Is there something else that I could try?

Word 2002 10.4524 SP-2.

TIA,
Bill

No. Alt-F9 doesn't toggle View Field Codes. It seems to make the view of the
document jump around though -- odd.

Alt+F9 does toggle the view of codes unless it's been reassigned, and that
could be responsible for the document reformatting. There are, however,
against all logic, some field codes that are not affected by this. TC and XE
fields are formatted as Hidden text, and this overrides their "field
code-ness." You have to toggle the view of those codes using the Show/Hide ¶
button, Ctrl+*, or the "Hidden text" or "All" check box on the View tab of
