In my installation FF launches a new browser window every time I
launch a url. I would like to reuse the last open browser
window. Is there a way to do that ?

TIA..

Enter 'about:config' in the location bar, and change the value of
browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs to 'true'. (You can use the
filter to find that key more easily.) After a restart, the options
you want should show up under Tools|Options|Tabbed Browsing.

Or you may just want to install the Tab Browser Preferences extension,
which puts all the tab behaviour options in the GIU.

Yes. Ignore the other suggestions to install an extension and to
muck around in the config settings. Firefox has an easy preference
setting to do it:

(1) Click Tools menu, select Options.
(2) Click the Advanced tab.
(3) In the "Tabbed Browsing" section, select "A new tab in the most
recent window" -OR- "The most recent/tab window" (depending on
your browsing style).
(4) Click "OK".

Done! :)

Not quite. These options are hidden by default. If you don't "muck around
in the config settings" (either using Q's method or by editing the user.js
file), you won't get these options in the advanced options.

They aren't on my fresh install of Firefox, and I didn't muck
around with any config settings to make them visible.

Hmm, you must be mistaken or using a non-standard build then.

Otherwise the rest of us, are mucking around in the configuration for no
reason :)

You do get the option to control how links are opened from other
*applications* though. Perhaps you are talking about that?

I was using RC1 when I posted this, and it was not too clear,
or I was wearing my foggy glasses.. I upgraded, and payed
closer attention to the options, and yes I found the settings
to open pages just as I want.

Thank you. :)

Nope. See KHaled's post which confirms that I am correct. :)

I can also confirm -- I have a profile with no extensions and only the
default themes, and the options are there. (Once Tab Browser Prefs is
installed, all the tab/window options are elsewhere.)

Hmm interesting, why then did you post the instructions for mucking in
about:config?
