Few questions

I inherited a Dell Computer that uses Windows 2000 Professional Edition. I
hardly know anything about W2000 Pro and, in reality, I also have limited
knowledge of the other Operating Systems. I do have questions that,
hopefully, someone may be willing to help with.

1. Since I am the only one using this Computer and have no fears of anyone
else using it, is there a way to eliminate log on screens or bypass the
administrator's whatever......?

2. Is there a utility similar to msconfig, used in W98, that I can use to
control the starting programs?

3. Is there a way to find out what resources are being used or are available
at any given time?

4. Is there a way to backup large files in 3.5' diskettes in a Computer
using W98SE and restore them in another computer using W2000 Pro?

Thank you, in advance!

Control Panel / Users / Untick "Users must log on".
2. Is there a utility similar to msconfig, used in W98, that I can use to

You can get msconfig.exe for Win2000 from here:
http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnldoth.htm
3. Is there a way to find out what resources are being used or are available
at any given time?

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch the Task Manager, then have a look
at the various tabs.

By far the simplest way would be to buy a flash disk
("Memory stick"). They have ample capacity to for
your large files.

If you insist on using floppy disks then you need to download
one of the many file splitters available as freeware. Alternatively
you could use WinZIP and tell it to span the file over several
floppy disks. Not recommended . . .

* Control Panel|Users and Passwords, then uncheck the box for "Users must
enter a user name and password to use this computer"

| 2. Is there a utility similar to msconfig, used in W98, that I can use to
| control the starting programs?
* Natively you can; Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative
Tools\Computer Management(Local)\System Information\Software
Environment\Startup Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column,
you'll find the path to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup"
directories or from the registry's "Run" keys. (note that this window is
read-only so you must manually navigate to the location below to edit or
otherwise delete)

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

or copy msconfig from Windows XP to the "windows" directory
or AutoRuns from sysinternals
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

| 3. Is there a way to find out what resources are being used or are

* You can use Task Manager and or Performance Monitor

| 4. Is there a way to backup large files in 3.5' diskettes in a Computer

* Not sure what you're asking here. 1.44 mB is all you get with a 3.5"
floppy.

1. Yes, you can use TweakUI (for win2k)

2. Yes, it’s called msconfig

3. Yes, task manager (Ctrl + Shift + esc)

4. Probably, but personaly I wouldnt bother.

Pegasus, Dave Patrick, Sparda ........I appreciate your interest in my
questions and I thank you for it.
You all have shown or suggested what can be done.
I see that there is some work and experimenting to do in order to understand
and see if I can follow up on any of the sugeestions. Thank you, again!

Sorry, fellows! I do not know if I failed to follow the suggestions properly.
However.......
My daughter was the one who gave me the computer. The original owner, as
administrator, had her name in place as acting(?) Administrator, and another
user named ‘Guest’.
Since I’ve had the Computer, her name would show up on the Logon Screen. I
just had to press Enter or OK for auto logon, I guess, and all would appear
to be OK..
As suggested for by passing the Logon screen, I went to the Control Panel
and tried to uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a username and
password to use this computer †The Administrator Screen came on wanting me
to enter the
Password. I hesitated in going ahead, fearing that the Password that I had
been given may not have been the correct one. But eventually I entered it.
The Desktop Icons came up, as usual, but other screens popped up dealing with
Windows 2000 tutorials and stuff like that. After closing all, I
clicked on My Documents and was shocked to see that it had only one Folder.
Wanting to search for a File that I had saved earlier, I clicked on
Start/Search and suddenly other Screens popped up wanting to configure
Windows 2000 and asked for the System’s CD to be inserted.
I cleared and rebooted. Again the Administrator Logon Screen pops up and,
whether I Click Enter or enter the Password, I am back at the same mess. I am
lost, as I cannot get back to the prior settings.
I would be glad to and would promise not to compalin any longer. Is there a
way to do that?
Could I restore a prior Registry, if there is one, and how do I do that?
I am really lost!

Extremely simple: Replace the "Administrator" logon name with
your daughter's logon name.

When setting up the auto-logon feature again, make sure that
your daughter's name is selected. Last time you selected the
administrator's name.

I forgot to add:
- You can log off any time by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. You can now
log on under any name you choose.
- To prevent AutoLogon, hold down a shift key during the startup phase.

Pegasus, not sure HOW, but fumbling about, I did get back to where I was few
days back. I can live with it!
Thanks for your patience!
