Mike Green

I run a 2 computer home network. I use a desktop running
XP home and my girlfriend runs a laptop with W2000 pro.

For a looong time now, well over 6 months, we've had
problems running Messenger. My SO always runs wm 5. I
*have* to use windows messenger 4.7 or 5 because if I use
msn messenger then every time someone sends me a message
or I even open a screen to send someone a message... I
get logged off.

I've written to this forum a couple of times before and
gotten no answers and now I'm really really fed up with
the whole thing... especially because I actually do
*want* to use messenger!

Please please please What's happening and how do I get to
use msn messenger?

Regards
Mike

I could be wrong on this, but the multitude of versions you mention leads me
to suspect you might be running more than one instance of Messenger? This
could also explain your problem of getting logged off. I've seen this with
other people who try to run MSN Messenger alongside Windows Messenger, and
even with a telephone call, it can get pretty confusing.

My own advice would be to try running *Windows* Messenger, and in the
Options > Preferences area uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts",
so that it won't run unintentionally. Restart, and confirm that Windows
Messenger is not running. (Do not uninstall it from the computer
altogether, however.)

*Then* I would download and install the latest version of MSN Messenger, and
conversely make sure it *does* run at start-up by checking "Automatically
run messenger when I log on to Windows".

Good luck!

Hi Brent,

Thank you for answering.
I've done what you suggested and I still get the same
problem.

I had done this before your answer too... many times in
fact... in order to try and get things up and running
properly.. but I did it again after your missive, re
downloading the latest MSN messenger. I've tried to do
this with windows messenger 4.7 and version 5 as well and
have just finished hence my reply now.

*Nothing* Seems to work. I still keep getting signed out
from MSN messenger either if someone sends me a message
or I try to send someone a message. One point I didn't
mention is that I can't see other peopls picture either.
I can just see the default messenger icon.

I may be way off base on this one but you can give it a
shot. Outlook Express is tied in pretty tight w/ MSN
Messanger so open both of them and check out some of the
options. Outlook express has one where it will disconnect
when done sending and receiving messages. I'm wondering
if that's affecting your messanger or maybe msn messanger
has a similar setting within it.

Hope this helps.

Josh,

Good thought but I'd already checked that out. I don't
use outlook express and there are no accounts set up in
that program and I set the options as well just in case
it was affecting the messenger.

Thanks though.

Mike
