Windows XP Help and Support contains information on using and configuration
of the Windows Fax Console. Enter Fax in the search box.
You need to scan into a program such as Word that can accept scans. The use
File, Print. In the print window select Fax as your printing device.

This could be done one of two ways. In your faxing
program, you may have an "Acquire" button that will
activate the scanner and bring the image in. Another way
would be, in your picture editing program. After scanning
normally, bring up the image you want to fax and select
PRINT. Instead of printing it to your real printer, change
it to "print" to your fax modem. This should bring up a
window that will ask you for the fax phone number to send
it to.
If you have a new scanner, there could be a 3rd way. My
scanner has "One Touch" buttons, one of which is FAX.
Clicking that button will scan the document and
immediately send it to the faxing software.

Two ways of sending multiple scanned pages to a fax are:

Use Microsoft Office Tools / Document scanning, Check the box "Prompt
for additional pages". Print the images to Fax

Use Adobe Acrobat (full version, not Acrobat Reader) do File / Import
/ Scan. Print images to Fax
