We are trying to fax from MS Word 2002 with Outlook 2002
and we need to remove the area code for long distance
faxes within our own area code.

We have set the dialing preferences and area code rules.
MS Outlook seems to be responding to this because called
dialed through Outlook don't include the area code, but
our faxes from MS Word are still being dialed with the
default area code.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for your advice, it worked! I had thought
that the +1 was worse than the area code, so hadn't
inlcuded it in the address book. I had no idea it worked
this way. Thanks again.

BTW, we're faxing directly from MS Word using the Outlook
address book. Just specifying "fax" as the printer.

You didn't specify your Fax software. No Fax service will process dialing
rules unless the phone number to which you are sending the fax is in
"international format." Details on how to use international format to invoke
dialing rules are available here:

Word has no fax software. With Outlook 2002 you must be using either Windows
2000 Fax or Windows XP Fax. Each integrates quite differently with the
Outlook Address Book.
