I have acquired a GPS device but have been unable to download waypoints from
my PC to the GPS device. I keep receiving the message " serial port selected
is receiving data from an unknown device". I have been unable to identify
what else is using the serial port. I have tried downloading to my GPS using
another compyter and it works fine. Therefore the problem is not with the GPS
or the interface cable. I presently run Windows XP Home Edition. I have
noticed however that everytime I try to download to the GPS device, I get 2
warnings in the EVENT log (32068 and 32026)' the source of which is the
Microsoft Fax. I do not have any fax (hardware or software) to my knowledge
installed on my PC.I suspect this may be what is causing my problem with the
serial port but am at a loss on how to get rid of FAX warning. Can anyone
help? Bill

Do you have a modem of any sort? Open Device Manager, click the + next to
"ports" and see what's there. If there's a modem, "disable" it by right clicking
on it (if you try to "uninstall" it, Windows will re-install it at your next boot
if you don't physically remove the hardware). If you don't see any modems, try
viewing hidden devices.

See here for how to do the above: http://tinyurl.com/yqc66

The usual question with regard to XP's fax service is how to install it: you may
need to do the opposite. It can be found at Control Panel, Add or Remove
Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components.

Hi Lem,
Thanks a million. With your guidance, I was able to identify the "unknown"
device that has been causing me problems for many months. By trial and error,
I was able to identify my problem was being caused by an Infrared Device
(Serial Cable using IpDA Protocol). When I disabled the device, my conflict
disappeared and I was able to download waypoints to my GPS device. So far I
have been unable to identify what may not be working as a result of disabling
this device but at this point, I do not appear to be having any other
problems. Thanks for taking time to address my issue. Bill

Glad to hear you got things working. I didn't think of an IR device. Many laptops
have IR tranceivers to "talk" to non-radio wireless devices, e.g., keyboards, mice,
digital pagers, pda's, digital cameras, etc. If a device has an infrared
transceiver, you will see a small, dark red window on it. If you don't have any of
these gadgets, you won't miss disabling your IR serial port. (Even if you do have
one, most of them can connect using an alternate technology, such as firewire).
