Hi all

I've recently installed XP Home and have trialling the Fax application.

Everything is working fine other than if I try to view a fax in the Fax
Console nothing happens. I get the hourglass for a second and the mouse
pointer does its nice multi colored thing, that's it.

I've checked file associations as recommended on this newsgroup but that's
all OK.

I can find the files in the archive, double-click on the icon and view the
file in the Fax Viewer but not from within Console.

I have noticed the same behaviour on my friend's XP machine as well, so
this is not limited just to my machine.

Can anyone help?

There are many causes for this problem. Most often, this problem arises
because some other imaging application that you installed has set itself as
the default viewer for TIF files. To view faxes from the Fax Console, the
Windows Imaging and Fax viewer must be your default viewer for TIF files.
You can easily restore that setting in Windows Explorer > Folder Options.
File Types. For most users the command line should read:

"rundll32.exe <drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1"

Another common cause of this problem is firewall software Trojan horse
rules. The most common is one that ships with Norton Internet Security.
Details on that on are available here:

Thanks Russ, but as mentioned in my first post I had already verified that
the file associations are correct.

The issue with a firewall interests me though. I use Kerio Personal
Firewall and my friend's machine uses Zone Alarm. You mention Norton
firewall but the link refers to the Symantec website article which is not
really a very clear explanation.

I wonder if there is any information any where else as to what ports could
be being blocked to prevent the operation.

Russ,

I've had another look at the NIS article and I've verified that my firewall
rules don't block any connections using any localhost ports so I'm fairly
confident that this isn't the problem either

I can't find anything on the Microsoft website with regard to this problem,
but it must be fairly common looking at the number of posts here and my own
experience.

So I'm stumped, for the moment...

THANK YOU!!! You just solved a problem I have been
having for months since purchasing a new computer. I
have tried, unsuccessfully to get help from DELL, without
success! Now I can view my received faxes correctly.

Thanks again!
