I've been using the same number for my home phone and small business fax. I
also have a message machine on the same line. I had to receive faxes manually
or else my message machine would pick up on the 4th ring and emit/record a
fax tone, preventing the caller from leaving a message.
To solve the problem, I got a second phone number with a distinctive ring on
the same line. I cannot figure out how to configure Fax to answer only this
new number as a fax. I used the fax wizard to reconfigure it with the new
number and set it to receive automatically on the first ring. But the first
time someone dialed my original number, the call was treated as a fax (fax
tone emitted even when I picked up the handset).
The phone company assured me the second number was a solution. Will this
not work with Windows XP fax. Do I need to disable the windows fax program
and install a separate fax program such as WinFax to make this work? Any
other advice is much appreciated.
