Fax used to work

For some reason Fax seems to have stopped working. I can
go through all the steps in the Fax Wizard but when I
press the Finish button it simply stops and nothing
happens. I've tried reconfiguring to no avail. Can
someone please point me to what I am missing.

Not without at least some clue:
What did you change that broke fax?
List the precise steps by which you are trying to send the fax and what
appears in the Fax Console.
What error messages are you getting in Event viewer?
What is the status of the Fax Service?

I think it was changing the modem. I have a winmodem and
an external modem, both of which work fine on the
internet. It is now connected to the modem (winmodem)
that I always used successfully in the past for faxing.
I always use the external modem for internet because I
like to be able to see what is happening and I can shut
it off if it hangs.
List the precise steps by which you are trying to send the fax and what
appears in the Fax Console.
I scanned the image and converted to .jpg (Photoshop).
With Fax and Picture viewer I sent it to the "Fax"
printer which processed it using the Fax Wizard. When
the process completed the screen reported something to
the effect "your file was successfully printed. The fax
program (dialing and reporting progress) never
displayed. I am not sure when, but eventually the fax
did appear in the Fax Console Outbox with the message
that the recipient never answered and the number of tries
were exceeded.
What error messages are you getting in Event viewer?
Numerous messages. Each attempt generates a different
response. The earliest says (among other things) no dial
tone.
What is the status of the Fax Service?\
Printers and Faxes window says 0/Ready

Apparently it doesn't always pay to be terse. Sorry

I suspect the problem is incompatibility with your modem. Winmodems are
notorious for not working with XP Fax.
Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem incompatibility is not apparent
during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you
first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer
an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error
messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error."
There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem
might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires
enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which
require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best
advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed
on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

Thank you very much for you detailed analysis. I suspect
you are right BUT, I have been using Fax with XP since XP
was first released. I have had the same hardware and the
only thing that has changed is the upgrades from MS.
Don't ask me what prompted me to change configuration
when the program was working fine. What really bugs me
is I don't seem to revert to the original.
I almost invariably use email but the medical community
seems to be emotionally wedded to faxes.

Tell me about it. It was the need to get EKG's via fax that got me started
in all this.
