Fax tones interrupts voice calls

I have my XP fax set up to answer automatically after 3
rings, but I always get fax tones on every call I get.

I thought fax systems scanned for fax tones to know when
to cut in.

Mine always cuts in regardless. Even if I answer the call
the fax will begin to scream at me. Having an auto answer
is useless if it can't tell voice from FAX.

Any thoughts???

The XP fax facility can't be configured to differentiate
between voice and fax calls. If you have it set to auto-
answer, it will. Auto-answer is not useless if you want to
be able to receive faxes when you're away.
 
I'm afraid, Windows fax cannot distinguish voice/fax calls on its own. But
you could try using a voice/data switch. More details at:
