Fax Setup failure

My machine used to have Symantec Fax Starter Edition
installed on it. At some point during my upgrades to XP
Pro and the service packs / updates, the Fax printer was
deleted / dissappeared. I also have nothing in the Fax
folder under communications. When I tried to use Fax
Setup, the software appeared to go through the motions
but I got no fax printer or console and no faxing
capability. When I tried Add Windows components, I
initially got a error about an inaccessible reg key
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters\Sec
urity). In my hurry to get my fax sent I just added a key
by that name (there was none in my registry) and reran
the wizard. Still no joy with respect to fax capability.
No other known harmful effects. What should I try next?
I'm using a conexant V.92 fax modem that work for other
purposes.

Just some additional information. Symantec Fax Starter
Edition was installed as part of Office 2000,
specifically, Outlook. The method used is to install a
printer driver (not a fax printer) to handle passing a
document to a separate fax program. Can't get it to work.
When I uninstall the Symantec product, Windows XP Pro
still has a problem with the Fax Setup. The log created
goes back to the initial installation. Most of the log
file is unintelligeble to me but it appears that the
setup gets to a point where it does registry manipulation
and then it switches to uninstall and cleans up
everything that it tried to do up to that point. I never
get a Fax Printer to install, I never get the fax
console, etc.

I just want the functionality I paid for, rather than
going out and buying yet another piece of software...

How did you uninstall WinFax SE?
Is your modem on the Win XP HCL list?

I used the Office2000 Setup program to remove the
feature. The Conexant 56K HSF V.92 PCI Modem is on the
HCL for WinXP.

I have reinstalled the Symantec Fax SE feature and it is
functional. I am still concerned about the failure of Fax
Setup to function but at least I can send a fax if I need
to.

WinFax SE was a nasty little program. There is no way you removed it
completely through Office Setup. It is the most likely reason Windows XP Fax
will not work because it is very intolerant of other fax programs that
retain control of your modem.
