Fax service: Stopping... deleted... dead.

I was having problems with the Fax Console, which I traced to the Fax
Service being in "stopping" state (for days; I'm sure glad the brakes on
my car are better than that).

So I thought "Right! I'll stop you!" and I promptly uninstalled the "Fax
Services" in add/remove programs.

Then I tried to add it back in, and it couldn't find the files. I could
find them, but every time I found a file, it just said it couldn't find
it (where I'd just SEEN it). Then I noticed that on each attempt, it was
stopping at a different file. So I kept adding "Fax Services". About 40
times in all. Then it reached "Configuring Fax Services" and ended with
no errors. That's where I am now. No Fax Service, "Fax Services" in
Add/Remove programs unchecked. I can check it till I'm blue in the face,
and it completes with no errors, but no progress either.

So, does anyone know how I can *really* repair my Fax Services, or
failing that, can anyone recommend a reasonable, free, fax send/receive
program?

Following the instructions in there I came to:

4. Click Start, Click Run, type mmc, and then click run
5. Click Console, click Add/Remove Snap-in and add the "Security and
Configuration" snap-in

Well, I ended up with a window "Console1" with an enclosed window
"Console Root". I couldn't find any "Console" to click on, so ignored this.

After a bit of hunting, I found "Add/Remove Snap-in" under "File"

There isn't a "Security and Configuration" snap in, so I chose "Security
Configuration and Analysis" one as second best.

After this it went swimmingly. Thanks!

Now all I need to do is fix the poxy USB to Serial bridge that would
allow me to get at my old Fax Modem.

You're welcome, thanks for the follow up.

And the best follow up of all (from my perspective):

The poxy USB to Serial bridge worked, and the Fax Console found my
modem. All I need now is a fax number I can test with, but the modem is
sitting there with the "TR" light on, so it's looking very good.
