Can I configure Outlook 2007 to insert the actual fax number in the "To:"
field of a new message to contact when I click the "To:" button and select
the contact's fax "display name" in the "Select Names: Contacts" window? By
default outlook now populates the To: field with the contacts name followed
by (Business Fax).

You can if you think you need to. You can set the Display As field for any
electronic address to whatever you want. It serves no purpose to do so.

I am considering using a web based fax service. In order to send a fax they
want me to type the fax number in the To: field and add their domain name. I
figured that if I could get outlook to add the fax number for me, then I
could save keystrokes. I am unable to find any info in the help file on how
to display the fax number. Could you please point the way?

Won't work. You cannot use Outlook with an Internet Fax Service unless that
service has been specifically designed to work with Outlook. You would have
to select one that has been so designed and install their integration
module. You'll find the ones that are by going to File > New > Internet Fax
in Outlook.

I don't know if their service works or not, but they claim that it does as I
previously described without installing an integration module. See the
tutorial at http://www.myfax.com/support.asp

Please explain in outlook how can we set the Display As field to show the
fax number?

You can't. Nor do you need to.
It is up to your Internet Fax Service provider to provide the support you
request. I do not have time to review their tutorial and interpret it for
you.

I asked how to save keystrokes in MS Outlook by configuring it to populate a
field with data that it already has, namely a fax number. You stated in part
: You can set the Display As field for
any electronic address to whatever you want."

If you can please explain how.

I checked. It only works for email addresses. Fax addresses have no Display
As dialog exposed.

I selected my Internet Fax service based on which company actually developed
the software to integrate with Outlook. That's why I chose Venali. It
populates the To: field with exactly what Venali needs to send the fax. So
should your service.

Thanks for the venali reference.

I did look at their website information and found that they require a user
to manually type in the fax recipients phone number and add @venali.net just
as other Internet fax services require. But keeping in mind what you said
about installing their software and having it automatically populate the To:
field I asked their customer service about it. They just called and said that
they offer no such software or functionality, the fax recipients number must
be typed in manually.

I suppose it depends upon who you speak to...
Thanks again.

Venali doesn't "offer" it and doesn't need to. Once Venali is integrated
with Outlook, it is easy to use the Outlook
Address Book, autocompletion, autoresolution, or any other method for
recipient selection that Outlook supports. More info here:
