Hi everyone - I am having a problem with my fax from
Windows XP, specifically with the tracking and viewing. I
configured my fax to have the console pop up when a fax
is being sent or received; basically I checked all the
boxed uner the tracking tab on configure fax. I also can
only view or preview the fax with the windows mstemp fax
viewer. Before the blaster virus the tracking was working
fine and the I could view faxes with the windows fax and
picture viewer.

Does anyone know how I can restore my fax tracking and
viewing?

Thanks!!

There are many causes for this problem. Most often, this problem arises
because some other imaging application that you installed has set itself as
the default viewer for TIF files. To view faxes from the Fax Console, the
Windows Imaging and Fax viewer must be your default viewer for TIF files.
You can easily restore that setting in Windows Explorer > Folder Options.
File Types. For most users the command line should read:

"rundll32.exe <drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1"

Another common cause of this problem is firewall software Trojan horse
rules. The most common is one that ships with Norton Internet Security.
Details on that on are available here:

Russ - thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, I am not
sure how to restore the setting. I went to Windows
Explorer>folder options>file types and found the TIF
Image file (I actually have 2 file types - TIF Image and
TIFF Image) However, I do not know what to do from there.
Also, will restoring this setting also solve my tracking
problem with the fax console?

I appreciate your help. Thanks.

Russ - I finally figured out how to change the viewer to
my default. Thank you so much. My problem now is the fax
monitor does not pop up so that I can track my faxes even
though I have it configured to do so. Any thoughts on
that? I really appreciate your help. Thanks again.

Installing Windows XP SP1 fixes all the known causes of this behavior. There
may be others, however.

Russ - I have the service pack 1 installed and I checked
the website for any other updates I may not have had...no
luck. The link you gave me for symantec did not work. I
have McAfee Anti-virus anyway........

Feel free to ask Microsoft Support. They need to be clued in to the other
causes of the problem. No others have been identified or conveyed to me yet.

Right click on the fax printer that you are using to fax and click on
tracking. Check whether status monitor is configured to pop up when you
send/receive fax. If not then please do it, else reply back.
