For reasons known only to the brain dead marketers at Microsoft Vista Home
Premium lacks built-in fax capabilities.
However the sound applet gives one the option of associating sounds with fax
send/receive operations.
It is attention to details like this which speaks volumes about why Vista is
what it is and isn't what it should be.

If you install a third-party fax program, you can then
associate the fax sounds with that program.

Next question....

Yes, it was silly of MS to take the view that fax is of no interest to the
home user, leaving XP upgraders in the lurch.
Third party fax programs that work well with Vista mentioned at this NG have
included:
RKS Fax (simple interface, nice cover page designer, good for occasional
use)
Snappy Fax (reasonably simple interface, quirky cover page designer, fairly
extensive features suitable for a more serious fax setup)
I used Snappy Fax happily for a year but have now settled for the simplicity
of RKS Fax. For convenience I receive fax via dmclub/email.
Actually if I were to go back to XP, I would probably install one of these
two in preference to using the XP Windows fax driver.
