just tring to set up my machine to send and recieve faxes and believe I followed the wizard ok in windows xp. I get a lin busy error when sending the fax and I am unable to preview the fax as an error occurs..........not much to go on but can anyone suggest anything

Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem incompatibility is not apparent
during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you
first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer
an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error
messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error."
There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem
might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires
enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which
require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best
advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed
on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

thanks for the reply.

I have bought a new computer (Medion) with a creative vv.9x dsp data fax modem. I have just tried to send another fax today and the situation is no better, not surpirising! I have not altered anything but now the faxes are not being sent so I don't even get the line is busy error. It still will not preview the fax. I have been trying to send them using the fax console and the preview softwarre being used is photo impact bundled ed. Any more ideas will be greatly appreciated. The error code when trying to preview was error occurred reading of ccitt code.

What about the ideas I already posted? Have you verified that the modem is
on the Windows HCL list and using the latest drivers?

Stev/Russ,
Sounds like a problem for me too. However my system(XP)
was re-installed onto another (larger) hardrive. So, now
the FAX continually gives me that "There is no answer"
message. What once worked fine before...

Things I have noticed are:
1. Word 2000, HP Photo and Imaging director, to name the
usual. Couldn't find FAX choice on the "send to"
feature; Only E-mail, until I re installed Outlook
express...

2. Even though my Modem/Fax card is listed on the HCL and
Windows says "this is the best driver of your equipment"
I cannot try to set up another Generic modem because
Wizard only see com1 and com2. My modem/fax board is
inserted into the PCI slot functions as com3 (I'm writing
this as we speak...) Device Manager only shows com3
under "modems". Com1 and com2 are only listed
under "ports". I though my CMOS might be disabling this.
But taking a look I can only see com1 and com2, as they
are hardware out the back of the motherboard... The only
way I can see more ports is by utilizing the "Install new
printer/FAX Wizard" then all serial's, parellel's and
USB's show up. However, I still cannot reasign my
modem...

3. I couldn't read my old address WAB with Windows FAX
Console until after I re-installed Outlook express and
imported the old address book to there.

4. I still cannot read any address book with Word 2000. I
receive "Log on failed. You must be logged on to
Microsoft Exchange to access you address book. Error
Code: "Unspecified error." "

So, I can't help to think there is some simple software
conflict occuring here... But I just cant put my finger
on it!
