Hi: Using Windows XP fax module I can not fax using the address book
until I make a modification to the phone number, dropping the area
code.

How can I get outlook 2000 not to add the area code each time I add a
local number? I have set the dialing rules NOT to use the local rules,
but in Outlook when I add a new contact's phone number, if I do not
put in the area code, outlook automatically adds my local one.

Well the Fax in Windows Xp home picks this up and will not send a fax
if that area code is present.

Any way to fix this in Outlook so it will not add the area code
automatically?

Thanks

Jim

Actually, you've assumed incorrectly. You want both the area code and the
country code in your phone number formats. Like all of its predecessors, the
Windows XP Fax service will not process dialing rules unless the phone
number to which you are sending the fax is in "international format."
Details on how to use international format to invoke dialing rules are
available here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q318575

That works for out of area code places. Are you saying I need to type
in the 1+local area code + the local phone number as well?

That format wants to dial a long distance call and the fax responds ..
you do not need to dial one to make this call and the fax will not go
thru.

I have tried the full canonical number in the address book to only get
the results as above.

Our area code 260 is for local and out of area as is the 717 in PA. As
I am sure it is for other places too

So what I want is the address book not to add the (260) or any area
code when I add a local phone number to a contact..

Without the area code for local the FAX works fine.. so how can I get
OUTLOOK not to ADD the area code?

Thanks

Every fax number in your Contacts Folder must be in international format.
After that it is a matter of configuring your dialing rules correctly. I've
never used a dialing rule so cannot help with that part.

I looked and its more trouble then it is worth to put in all the
exchanges I do not want to dial the area code or ones that I do..

Is there just a simple way to.. not have outlook add local area
codes.. and just allow it to add the phone number?

That is all I want to do is use the KSS formula.. keep it simple ...

So ,when I add a contact all I want to use is a 7 digit number for
local, I would think outlook should have a feature to turn off the
auto setting for inserting the area code.

Thanks

No. Phone number formatting is hard coded. And if you're using the number
for faxing, you still want the number in full international format. It's the
only format the fax service will recognize correctly.

thanks Russ.. but the fax service does not dial correctly using the
Outlook 2000 address book

As I mentioned before., 1+ area code+ phone number will not dial right
as many many cities now are long distance charges for the same area
code and one has to use the 1 prefix and the users local area code as
well... I would be here for months trying to figure out what 3 digit
exchange to eliminate.

I will find a work around for the fax... and then use those numbers to
add to the address book,

Again, thanks

You should be able to set up dialing rules to handle those requirements.
