I have a HP machine running Windows XP. I'm
having "system" problems, so the staff from HP Technical
Support want me to reinstall Windows XP. I have over 300
faxes in inbox, sent, etc. I don't want to lose these
when I reinstall the O/S. Is there a way to either back
these file up without having to copy-paste each fax
individually? If not, can I back up the file that stores
all these files, reinstall the O/S, and then put the file
back? If so, what is the name of the file(s) that I need
to save off?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me!!!

There are various FAX directories (folders). INBOX and SENTITEMS for example.
Locate them with Windows FIND tool.

As a test, copy the current directories, then rename the originals. Then
attempt restoration with the copies. If it works, then your plan should
succeed.
