Fax Charge

Hi:
I received a bill from telephone company yesterday.

In there, I found that one of charges was 'fax' that
was sent from here, eastern part of the US from the West,
California. For this, it was $9.00 for about 50 minutes or so.

To be honest, I was stunned, because I didn't think that fax
sent by using 'fax' on the computer was the same as an e-mail
which is NO charge.

Is this to be normal, ..... getting a bill from telephone co. due to
fax that was sent from the computer?

Thanks for your response in advance.

If it was a long distance call, a charge for the long distance phone time is
absolutely normal. Fax has nothing to do with the Internet or E-mail.
Faxes are completely and totally telephone call oriented, so you're being
charged for a normal, long distance phone call. Ways to mitigate future
charges include sending Faxes during evening or night hours (if your long
distance service has different rates for these time periods) or finding a
long distance service with cheaper rates ($9.00 for 50 minutes is 18 cents a
minute which, IMHO, is on the high side for long distance services these
days).

Hal has given you the correct info, but what I do is attach the document
to an email and you can send it to the other side of the world, FREE. Also,
the recipient does not have to have his computer ON. He/she can download at
whatever time they wish, unless they have a stand-alone Fax machine . Most
Faxes outside of your Area Code will incur a long distance charge. Fax is
on the way out as far as I am concerned.

Hi:
Thanks for the responses.

This fax was a kind 'voluntary' to send several photos,
because one of eBay folks wanted to get the photos
I had. Then, I voluntarily faxed them to one of eBay
enthusiums when he gave me his fax number.
Wonder whether he was aware of this, fax charge,
but it's all about learning experience in the computer.

From now on, I need to be more cautious as seeing my
complete ignorance on fax and such. I feel a bit embarrassed
to ask here, on this group, but there is no good site for this form
of question to post.

Thanks again,
