I hope this doesn't seem like a silly question, but how do I know if I have
fax capability. Is it part of the computer, the modem, the printer....?

It is part of the XP operating system. Go to Start > Accessories >
communications > Fax. The fax has to be set up for the first time , through
the Fax Wizard. The send portion of the fax works through the print to fax
portion of your printer software. Jym

If it's installed, you should see a shortcut to FAX under
START|ALL|ACCESSORIES|COMMUNICATION.

If not, put the XP disk in the drive...
Open Control Panel|ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS|WINDOWS COMPONENTS and put a
checkmark in the Fax Service box. Click on CHANGE/REMOVE

As has already been mentioned, XP has software capable of receiving faxes.

In any case, fax capability is a function of the modem. You can contact your
computer manufacturer, or you can ask the modem itself:

- Open Control Panel, switch to Classic View, and double-click Phone and
Modem Options.
- Click the Modems tab.
- Select your modem, and click Properties.
- Click the Diagnostics tab, and click the "Query Modem" button. If your
modem is fax-capable, it should be mentioned in the diagnostics blurb.
