I have Windows XP Pro Media edition on an HP pavilion pc. I went through a
ton of problems with trojans, viruses, etc, all fixed now, but I am not able
to fax, and I used to be, and when I run certain tests from help and support,
I show ethernet card failure. Also, in devices, some devices that used to be
named are now classified as unknown. I would really appreciate some help.
Thank you for your time. Regards, Cindy

You may need to reinstall the chipset drivers for your system's motherboard.
If your system didn't come with a Driver CD, get the precise model number of
your system and go to the HP support site. Identify, download and install
those drivers. Then save them off to CD and keep that with your XP install
CD. That disk will be used as the 2nd step in a windows reinstall.

Thank you, I will do that. I have gotten tired of checking for driver updates, because some of them, even though they come from Nvidia (who has the ethernet, video, and a few other things on here), have messed up my system. I am ready to go back to the original drivers that came with the system. It's an HP Pavilion a1430n dual amd processors 2 X 64, with an Asus motherboard, so I will go back to HP. Thank you very much. Kind regards, Cindy

The drivers that I'm referring to are core chipset drivers, and the other
drivers that sit on top of them often won't work stably or at all if the
underlying drivers are missing, corrupt or damaged.

If it's an ASUS board, take the model number, which will be clearly printed
on the motherboard itself, to the ASUS support site and get the drivers from
there. Install them and you should see the exclamation marks in Device
Manager go away. Then you can update drivers as needed.

That must be the problem, all the chipset drivers on HP are Nvidia, but the motherboard is Asus, and when I try to install the chipset drivers from Nvidia it tells me to do so through device manager, and it doesn't work. This is so frustrating, some things that used to work perfectly no longer do, and the more I try to fix, I don't know if I'm making it better or worse. I'll try the Asus site, thank you. Cindy

I just ran a report for myself with Everest and one thing on there was to
Debug the Video Bios. At this point I would gladly pay someone to remotely
access my computer and just correct what needs to be done.
