Favourites being deleted by group policy

I've got a strange group policy behaviour -

I've created a GPO at the site level, and created a few IE
settings for the corporate environment, including some
favourites - but I didn't tick 'delete existing
favourites' -

Now, all users get the policy, the new links, and keep
their old links - except -

Some users have some links with .doc in the title - these
get deleted every time the policy refreshes!!! This is
strange indeed!!

Any help appreciated!

Also - can someone PLEASE post some info on 'preference
mode' - the online docs make little or no sense.

Preference Mode:
"Preference mode settings are set by an administrator. However, a user
can change these settings after the policy is applied (for example,
your home-page setting or settings on the Advanced tab). After the
policy is applied to a client computer, a user can change home page
and advanced settings."

Hope this helps,
Dieter
