Following on from Crazylegs' Tesco thread I now bring you the pick your favourite capitalistic proletariat-penalising grocery concern thread :)

So which one do you favour? If any?

And of course it's computer related, Tescos sell laptops don't they? ;)

I voted Sainsburys, but that's perhaps because it's the closest to me. Although I do think they have a good selection of food and a good meat and fresh fruit/veg section.

When we were 3rd/4th year students we shopped at Longsight Asda... there was a whole aisle dedicated to cooking oil, row after row of frozen food, and a tiny little fruit and veg section. :wall: I know not all Asda's are like that, as the one near my parents is quite nice, but it does make me appreciate a proper selection of food!

If price didn't matter, I'd vote M&S - I love their food :D

Agree Ian ..but at Tesco you can have a bottle of wine , Main course ,
accompaniment, and dessert from their finest range all for £9 saving about £8 or £9 and they are fantastic..I have tried the lot..the wine is usually £6 on its own ;)

I have Tesco and Aldi next door and a Sainsburys mega store and Lidl right across from work ..and even a close Asda...must admit ....Tesco wins ...they have introduced a bargain range...so shoppers can be frugal....but lets not forget what makes profit..its having the basics like Bread , Milk at the opposite corner to the entrance...:)..Think about it

And there was me thinking I'd covered them all

I have missed Lidls, Netto and Marks and Sparks and no doubt a few others.

There's a M & S food shop just ten minutes walk from me I probably buy about 50% of my food from there, I nigh on live on ready meals cos it just doesn't seem worth the effort cooking for one.

I will often go there and buy just one thing, like milk, cos their prices don't exactly encourage you to impulse buy.

And despite popular belief not all of their food is good I bought an expensive curry from there once that was the absolute pits. That was about five years ago though.

I voted Sainsburys.
Where I live within a two-mile radius I have a choice of Sainsbury/Tesco/Asda/Morissons/M&S/Lidle/Aldi/Somerfield/ Iceland

The nearest being Somerfield/Iceland 200 Yards.:D the further Sainsburys:nod:

I voted Sainsbury's too, we use their on-line home delivery service. It's very good.

Locally, we've got ASDA, three Tescos, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland. Sainsbury's is about four or five miles from here, but it's always been our favourite.

Another two I missed for the poll list - Aldi and Iceland.

Oh, the shame, the shame...... :o

Just for the record I chose Sainsburys as well.

Nearest supermarkets to me are the aforementioned M & S food store, it's right next to the Cutty Sark boat (or what's left of it) and there's a Somerfield a short walk away, which is absolute rubbish, have to say.

Tescos are at Lewisham which is three stops away on the DLR, Sainsburys are on the Greenwich peninsula and Asdas and Lidl are at Charlton. I have to use the motor to get to those three.

Further east at Thamesmead there's a Morrisons, Iceland and Aldi all next to each other but I rarely go there.

I didn't mention Woolwich where there's a few cos it's really awkward to park there.

Although I mostly shop at Sainsburys I find that every shop has some good things that you can only buy at that shop. Asdas, for instance, has some really nice hot n spicy pepperoni whilst Somerfield has some delicious cherry ice cream.

Morrisons cos of the two for one offers and they do half decent bread and all the meat is sourced in Britain and is good quality. We have an Asda but I don't like the layout. Booths is very good for some things and all round the quality is impressive, bit like a posh Sainsbury's but same over pricing.
The local market is best for veg.

Mind you there is plenty of road kill up here even the odd Bambie or tourist.

I voted Asda's cos its cheaper than the rest and they have a very large superstore very close to where I live that stocks almost everything you care to mention, It includes a mezzanine floor upstairs with a super dvd and video games department and all the George clothes range which I don't like, but I know most women love looking round..

They always got some sort of deal on there either BOGOF or 3 for 2 deals..

We got 3 Tesco superstores in this town and 1 Sainsburys and none of them can hold a light to the Asda superstore..We also got a Lidl round the corner from me which I get odd bits in now and again and is actually quite expensive if you don't go careful...

We have a Marks and Spencer Garage metro on the bottom of the road which as Flopp's has already said costs you an arm and a leg, I only go in for Milk and bread and nothing else, tell a lie I do succumb to there packets of 4 Yum Yums sometimes... but thats it from there..

In these times of recession i expected to see aldi's and lidl's on the top of that list folks...but hey, i shop at tesco's for the change....LOL (That was tesco's,right??)LOL
Zzzzz

Sainsbury's all the way.

In Cambridge we have

3 or 4 big Tesco stores
1 Waitrose
1 Asda
2 Marks and Sparks food
1 Aldi
1 Iceland
2 Sainsbury's (one in city centre, one larger one on outskirts)
and a Morrison's in Cambourne about 10-15 minutes away.

It's always Sainsbury's unless we need something specific. Customer service is brilliant (returned some in-date smelly chicken the other day and the kind lady gave me a £10 good will voucher and some free anti-bacterial spray) and the food is good quality and reliable. The cafe is nice, we always go for lunch, and we like the range and layout. Tesco always seems to come second to Sainsburys in the range and layout stakes. Plus its a bit more posh, innit? ;-)

No Netto option :D

Aye, I've already admitted my omissions :o

To re-iterate, I missed out:

Netto
Lidl
Aldi
Iceland
Marks & Sparks

Mind you, that's probably because, with the exception of M & S they is all crap innit? :D

And alright, which two scallywags voted for Harrods?

just me that voted for waitrose then?

Admittedly it is kinda pricey but when there's only one of you to feed its worth it :D if there's one thing i'm willing to spend money on its good food.

There is a tesco and an Aldi just over the road both of which dwarf the waitrose, there's aslo a tesco local just round the corner from where i live which i usually pop into for the small things i've forgotten but in the main i use waitrose.

Edit: when i'm back at my parents i tend to use Sainsbury's, i used to do the night shift there so am slighly biased towards them lol

Does the site not log our preferences when we vote etc?

Not that I'm aware of but then again I've never looked.

Ian might know.

I like Waitrose too, they sell lots of stuff other places don't but the nearest one to me is at Sundridge Park, near Bromley, too far away really.

Because I used to work there? Maybe :)

In all honesty - the level of service there is noticeably better, I much prefer the atmosphere in Sainsbury's. It's more laid back and without sounding like a snob, middle class and reserved, to a point. The staff chat to you when you're at the checkouts which is nice - in Tesco they make the whole transaction quite uncomfortable by slinging your stuff down and then you have to pay, and then when they are ready to serve the next person you haven't finished packing!

I think the Sainsbury's store I go to stocks a bigger range than the Tesco, and I like their stuff. It's better food than Tesco, I'm sure of it!

I went into Iceland the other day and I didn't feel safe! Crikey! I don't like to make judgements about socio-economic backgrounds of customers and which shops they frequent, but I would rather have been wearing body armour whilst purchasing my £1 Lemon Tart!! (P.s. it was quite tasty)
