Hi,

Since upgrading to XP Pro sp2, when I attempt to organize favorites instead
of the usual form I am getting an HTML file.

Any ideas ?

Hi Robert.

Favorites are normally kept in an ordinary "Folder" called favorites, you
can search for files and folders and will find one or more of them depending
on how many "Users" have been created. They are simply "Links" just like the
icons on your desktop and sometimes it's handy to look in the folder because
you can sort by clicking on the grey column headers into date order and
alpha order giving you more options than looking from within IE.

However when you use the IE "Export" facility the process combines the lot
into a single HTML file (As I understand it) and this is probably less
flexible but okay from within IE.

If you made a backup using "Export" from within IE did you restore using
"Import" from within IE? If not try it and see what happens. I am only
guessing on this part because I always back up the actual folder rather than
export / import. Just habit I guess.

Hi Charlie,

I think my description was a bit vague, as I am not looking to export them.
Also, they are and fully functional, albeit in an increasingly long list, all
I am just trying to organize them in the normal way within IE, and where I
expect the organize favorites form to appear, that is with the
create/rename/move buttons etc, I am now getting an IE form with just HTML
code visible, so it looks to me like it is simply not being interpreted for
some reason.

Thanks,
Robert

Okay I see now, I had assumed you had done a "Backup" before installing the
major service pack... which does indeed put them all into a Netscape style
HTML file called "Bookmarks.html" by default.

If you have created sub-folders for them you can still search and locate the
"Real" favorites folder and should find the same structure there which you
can use to organize them until you get this fixed... I know what you mean
about a long list. What I can't help much with is what's actually causing
the problem, as you say it seems that whatever displays that window normally
isn't reading / interpreting the HTML properly.

Unless someone recognizes this problem, and I don't get as much time here as
I used to these days so I don't recognize it, have you tried disabling
Antivirus / Firewall / Popup Blockers etc to see if this makes a difference?
Are there any other strange symptoms since the installation? I'm thinking
here of some unexpected interaction, there have been some with SP2. I'd try
all these things before doing anything drastic since one can easily do more
damage barking up the wrong tree as it were. Sorry I can't be of more
immediate help.

I will try your suggestions about disabling Anti-virus / Firewall etc, but
for now I just reorganized them with sub folders as you suggested, strange
how the simple solution often eludes.

Thanks for you input, it's appreciated.
