I used to have little icons next to each of my favorites
and now half of them have dissappeared. Can someone tell
me how to get them back?

I have a similar problem. I added webpages to my favorites list with the
icons there. Then, I shut down my computer for the night. In the morning,
I turn on my computer and all the icons are now the "internet e." Any idea
what's causing that and how to fix it? Thanks.

....I went to the website provided in the above message, but this file needs
to be paid for...??? Is there a freeware version? Thanks.

The icons should be blue "E"s. The customized icons (also known as
favicons) only appear while the corresponding favicon file is in your
Temporary Internet Files folders.

What you can do instead of buying a program:
-- Grab the favicon file for a site out of your Temporary Internet Files
folders. When there are multiple favicon.ico files you will see
favicon(1).ico, favicon(2).ico and so on.

Place the ICO files into a folder that you have created. Perhaps call
this folder "Favicons." Rename the favicon.ico file so that it's easier
to tell what site it's for. Example: "BlueMagoo.ico"

Now that you have that part set up, locate the Favorite for the website
in your Favorites folder. Right click on it. Select Properties. Click
the Change Icon button. Using the controls on the next screen, navigate
to the folder and icon that you want to use. Select it. Click Open to
lock the selection. Click OK and OK again to close out the other
screens. (Using the example above, you would navigate to
Favicons\BlueMagoo.ico)

I was going to attempt was you suggested, but I went to the TIF folder and
only found cookies there. I deleted all the cookies and TIF's earlier
today, added the favorites back to the list and everything is the way I want
it. However, this won't stay that way after I restart. I should be able to
find the files, but I didn't. I even did a search for "favicon" but came up
with nothing. Am I looking in the wrong place? I know that the icons don't
HAVE to be named favicon.ico as long as a particular line of code is in the
header of the webpage, but none of the internet *.ico files came up in a
search of my c:\ drive.

I was using my dad's computer and, out of curiousity, I looked in his TIF
folder and found all the icons you were talking about. I think I'm going to
put all those files on a disk and put them on my computer using the method
you mentioned, but I was wondering why MY computer isn't saving this files.
I don't have any images or frames or anything.

For example, I loaded my website on my dad's computer and all the
information (ie. header, main, footer, the images, the icon) was in his TIF
folder. My computer only has the cookies. Any idea why that is? Thanks.

Well, at least you're getting closer to what you want to do. Check
Internet Options> Advanced settings and enable the multimedia elements
and use of frames. There is also a setting in Internet Options to delete
TIF files when closing the browser. You'll want to uncheck that box if
you're going to be grabbing these icons files now and then. Many privacy
programs (cookie blockers, firewalls, web washer type of apps) have
similar settings. May need to explore the menus in any of those programs
that you might have installed as well.
