In Windows XP, I can change the security settings of individual user's
favorites folder to prevent them from adding anything. In Win2K however,
there is no security tab to do this. Is there anyway to prevent users from
adding more items in favorites. This is a public PC and I don't want users
to add anything in addition to what I already have.

Thanks

All folders will have the security tab if it exists on an NTFS drive. This
includes the favorites folders for the users. It sounds like your drive is
FAT*.

The drive is NTFS. I can set the security on other folders but not the
Favorites Folder under any users profile.

I apologize. I see the same exact thing on my 2000 machine. What the? I'm
curious, and I can find nothing in the KB or via Google or jsiinc or
w2kfaq... I guess you and I are the only people in the world who are
missing the security and sharing tabs. ?

You can cacls the security settings, it seems. Also, I "net shared" my
favorites directory to see if 2000 would then at least let me see the
sharing tab. Nope.

This kind of thing must be done in Group Policy. Favorites is not the only Folder where you will see this. Try C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files. There are many others.

I thought that was the case with some of those "virtual" folders like temp
internet files I think, but I didn't realize that favorites was also like
that. FWIW, all tabs exist in XP.

We have SP4 installed also. Only General tab shows. I think I'll just
change the OS to XP.

FWIW, I also have all security tabs available.

Maybe your problem is due to a different version and/or patch level of the MSIE browser? Are you still running IE 5.01?

Just a thought...

I have the latest IE. Win2K is patched to the max. I have made various
regedits on this public PC to secure it. Maybe one of the entry is causing
it not to show. I'll look at all the reg entries I created and go from
there.

Could not find the culprit that hid the security tab. I found a workaround
though. The favorites folder on "All Users" profile still shows the
security tab. I deleted the favorites on Public profile and copied the
favorites folder from All Users. Set the permission to Read and Execute
Only for public and it seems to work. Thanks to all who replied.

No I did not. All I did was delete the favorites folder on Public profile
and copy the favorites folder from All Users.
Interesting. Did you copy the desktop.ini also?

Well that is where your issue is. The CLSID for the System Folder Favorites does not have the Property Handle as part of the registry. You can just add that to the Favorites in the registry for that CLSID if you wanted. I would base it on HKCR\Folders. But of course since you solved it without having the Favorites folder a system folder what the heck fixed is fixed.

Yup! Fixed is fixed. I will try to install Win2K from scratch next week and
see which step will cause the issue. But for now, I'm happy that I have
accomplished what I wanted to do.
