Favorites Bug

Hello,

Everytime I open Internet Explorer I am confronted with a toolbar at the
bottom of the screen and extra 'Favorites' in my Favorites drop-down menu in
Internet Explorer, which I have not added.

After trying to get rid of the problem, I was searching in msconfig and
found that there were some odd looking files that were being loaded from
startup. These files are, "Aimeggs", "CLOSE BOOB" and others which I've
already dealt with before (as you'll see), and so don't appear in msconfig
anymore.

Once I found the files (the ones that I have forgotten and don't appear in
msconfig anymore) I found that were in C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data as a folder called "1 Upload Gram Ante". In this
folder is an application called whatever the name of it was in msconfig;
sometimes it's CLOSE BOOB, sometimes its Aimeggs, Axis up, whatever - it
changes everytime I deal with the first problem. The other file is a system
file, and no matter what the application file is called, the system file is
always "surf seek thunk", no matter whether I deal with the problem or not:

I originally thought I'd solved the problem when I first encountered it by
deleting the files. To do this, I had to stop explorer.exe (because the files
I was trying to delete were in use otherwise) using a freeware program called
Process Explorer and then delete the files and the folder they were in.

However, they seem to reappear after every shutdown and re-open of IE.

I have updated Ad-Aware and tried run it to see if it picked it up - but it
doesn't.

The problem is very annoying as it shows a toolbar on my Internet Explorer
at the bottom and shows a list of Favorites which I don't actually have or
want. There are about 100 'Favorites' added to the list, and they all go to
http://66.220.17.154/search/search.cgi?affid=66&s=pet+med&src=bookmarks which
seems endorsed by "Search The Web!"

I have asked Lavasoft to look into this but thought I'd try and pick your
brains too. If anyone is interested in helping, screenshots can be seen here:

Hi Simon :-)

You have agood deal of scumware on your system, and as you said, some of it
can replicate itself over and over if not removed properly. Please follow

Jan,

There's a lot of information there! Basically, all the stuff in there (well,
80% of it) I already know. I'm not a n00b to this stuff at all, but the file
named above I simply cannot get rid of. I've tried everything in those links
except deleting Web Tangent, using CW Chredder (which found nothing) and
scanning with HijackThis (and I have posted the log on the site you linked,
mainly the Amuha one.

I basically need help for this exact problem, not just a general guide to
malware, adware, spyware etc. But I do appreciate you taking the time to help
me.

Another problem I've also encountered, is that I have a folder (where an REM
album is stored) and it's called "In Time- The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003".
When I click properties it says there is 0 files and 0kb... well, the songs
ARE in there. I have moved them to another folder but cannot delete the
original one with nothing in it. I don't know what's wrong with it, but I
can't delete it or do anything to it. Any ideas for this one too?

Thanks,

Simon

It is best to keep all replies in the same thread as your original post,

If you are knowledgeable in regards to scumware, then you are aware that by
the mere names of those files you memtioned in your original post, you have
more than just one problem, and more than just one type of scumware. Thus,
it is not going to be any 1 fix for your problems. It is good that you have
posted your log to the AumHa forums, and I hope that you followed all the
preliminary instructions after registering prior to posting your log so that
your post will not be ignored or deleted. The folks there are very good at
helping get rid of these types of sucmware, and they are very busy so please
be patient.

You indicate that you have already run all the programs that were in the
several lists of information that I provided before, was there anything
found by any of them? If so, what type of files were they? i.e, spywere,
adware, etc.?

Not really, although, with the nature of the warez on your system right not,
one or more of them could be causing a problem, and I would not try to do
anything with that folder until you are sure your system is clean. Some
warez will prevent any folders or files from being deleted, and if that
folder is proving to be a problem, they may well be affecting your files
there.

Id advise you to tackle that problem after you have resolved the other more
serious problem at the moment.

Hope this helps.

Jan,

Yes the names are different, but I think they are heavily related as they
all seem to migrate themselves to the exact same location, the "1 Upload Gram
Ante" folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data. They
all seem to run off the surf seek thunk.sys file. Before, it was just the
surf seek thunk.sys and CLOSE BOOBS.exe . I got rid of CLOSE BOOBS some days
ago, which has now replaced itself with "Axis up.exe" and "FORK DELETE.exe",
both of which are exactly the same as CLOSE BOOBS was, there's just two of
them now. "axis up" has been in there a few days (when I saw it I decided I
couldn't beat it and started searching the net for help - i.e. here) and
literally in the last hour the FORK DELETE one has shown up too.

Yes I have followed the instructions on AmuHa.

I have run Ad-Aware in Windows and on start-up and run AVG and run AVG on
those particular files and none of them found anything. They are both fully
updated.

I have solved the folder problem. No program I tried worked (they all said
the folder didn't exist) but I just deleted its parent directory and it had
gone. I think it was perhaps due to bad naming convention, as the album (when
burned) was called "In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003" and I think the
colon may have caused problems - I don't know - I'm guessing, but the problem
seems to have been cleared up now with regards to that minor side issue.

the mere names of those files you memtioned in your original post, you
have
more than just one problem, and more than just one type of scumware.
Thus,
it is not going to be any 1 fix for your problems. It is good that you
have
posted your log to the AumHa forums, and I hope that you followed all
the
preliminary instructions after registering prior to posting your log
so
that
your post will not be ignored or deleted. The folks there are very
good
at
helping get rid of these types of sucmware, and they are very busy so
please
be patient.

You indicate that you have already run all the programs that were in
the
several lists of information that I provided before, was there
anything
found by any of them? If so, what type of files were they? i.e,
spywere,
adware, etc.?

Another problem I've also encountered, is that I have a folder
(where
an
REM
album is stored) and it's called "In Time- The Best Of R.E.M.
1988-2003".
When I click properties it says there is 0 files and 0kb... well,
the
songs
ARE in there. I have moved them to another folder but cannot delete
the
original one with nothing in it. I don't know what's wrong with it,
but
I
can't delete it or do anything to it. Any ideas for this one too?

Not really, although, with the nature of the warez on your system
right
not,
one or more of them could be causing a problem, and I would not try to
do
anything with that folder until you are sure your system is clean.
Some
warez will prevent any folders or files from being deleted, and if
that
folder is proving to be a problem, they may well be affecting your
files
there.

Id advise you to tackle that problem after you have resolved the other
more
serious problem at the moment.

Hope this helps.

PA Bear,

I'm pretty sure that when I installed Messenger Plus! (about a year ago it
must be?) that I didn't install the sponsor as I know it's voluntary and I
know it causes havoc. I have no idea how the problem has just occured now in
recent days, because I personally have definitely not installed Messenger
Plus! again (I have no need to) for ages. Also, no one uses my computer
either... actually, one other person has in the past week or so, but I don't
think they would have reinstalled Messenger Plus!

Is there a way I can check? Is Messenger Plus! to blame for my problem? How
do I correct it - uninstall Messenger Plus! and then reinstall, ensuring the
sponsor isn't installed with it?

Thank you,

Simon

PA Bear,

I see you've posted in AmuHa. I will try those things tonight and see if
they work...

Thank you very much!
