When I click on the "Favorites" icon ,the space to the left of the regular
window is used but the area is blank, no favorites list. I checked under
"C:Documents and Settings\MYNAME\favorites" and the file is there. When I
double click all my favorites are in the file, they are just not being
displayed. What have I done??

Sarah, I think this may be an early sign of a spyware infection. If you
don't have these utilities already perhaps you'd like to try them, at least
the Microsoft one is easy to set up and use.

Important - LSP-Fix

Be aware that using either of these to actually remove spyware can result in
some programs refusing to work, in other words "Free" programs that you
downloaded on condition you accepted ads and so called "Research" may get
broken and you might want to uninstall them first. Some spyware actually
breaks Windows trying to force it's way in and you should arm yourself with
LSP-Fix before starting in case you lose internet connectivity.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Hi Sarah :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, after making
sure your system is free of any scumware as advised by Charlie and PA Bear,
if the problem persists, you might try the following and see if it helps:

Internet Explorer Favorites are missing/empty

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab
Uncheck "Enable Personalized Favorites Menu" if checked
Click on Apply then click OK.

or….

Files Added to Favorites Folder Are Missing [Q209088]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q209088

"Internet Explorer Favorites are missing/empty".
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#favorites

Show All Items on the Start Menu or Favorites Menu
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230596/EN-US/

and…...

Display all the links on the favorites menu
Bookmark Wizard http://www.moonsoftware.com/freeware.asp
AMdead Link http://www.aignes.com/products.htm

also...

Courtesy of Remesh -

Open Registry Editor and navigate to this location:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]
In the right-pane, double-click "Favorites" and copy the value and post it
here.

The correct value should be: "%USERPROFILE%\Favorites"

or........................

Use FolderRedirector utility and reset the shell folder paths for Favorites
to the default values (both user shell folders and shell folders registry
keys)

Using FolderRedirector utility to redirect special folders in Windows XP:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/folderredirector.htm

In XP..there is a local user policy for Favorites, and there is a check box
to delete the Favorites and only use the Favorites provided in the policy.
Check to be sure this setting is not selected.

or...

It might be an incorrect Registry setting:

You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys: (ignore the second if the value is not there)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

also….

It could also be that the Favorites folder is corrupted and you will need to
create a new one:

Create a new Favorites folder as per the instructions here
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers3.htm#favorites

Try creating new folder in our Favorites in IE and name it something you
will easily remember and stand out readily. Then go to Start>Search> and
enter the name of that folder and see where it shows up. It may well be
that you'll find the rest of the missing Favorites links there was well.
You can then just drag them over into the correct Favorites folder and
delete the incorrect folder.

Hope this helps.
