That has been known to happen. There are also other reasons as well. New
icons "force out or empty" preceding ones. These "Favicons", as they are
known, are stored in the TIF's, and can be lost when the file is cleared.
Not always, but many times.
To keep these favicons, you can follow a couple of routes. Some choose to
use a program such as Favorg1.4 or Faviconizer. Both freeware.

Faviconizer

I prefer the following as it is more stable, doesn't require an additional
program, is ultimately faster, and doesn'y get disrupted if one uses
TweakUI, Sysicon Cleaner, or renew the Shelliconcache.
When you notice a "favicon", use Start>Find>Files and folders. *COPY* (DO
NOT CUT) the favicon from the folder in which it is found. Then paste it
into a folder which you will name Icons (for example) and keep that folder
in your C
rive (for example). Rename the icon whatever you want to name it,
as any found will always be called favicon(1). Then you can change the
standard IE icon to your favicon by R-Click>properties>change
icon>browse>C>icons>the icon in question>OK>Apply>OK out.
Seems long, but it is Stable and will last until *you* want to change it.
Plus you don't have to use Favorg to scan each URL which can be many if you
have a lot of favorites, and also have it "time out" on you.
