I am trying to make some icons permanent.
I just saved Google's favicon to a permanent folder and renamed it.

I am trying to get this one

http://dictionary.reference.com/favicon.ico

When I try to save it, the there is no default favicon.icon.

It is trying to get me to save it as a bitmap. This doesn't show up as
an icon would.

Add the site to your favorites. The icon will appear next to the favorite in
your IE favorites list and in the Favorites folder. Find favicon.ico in the
Windows Temporary Internet Files folder. Copy the icon file to another
folder. Note: favicons are deleted when you clear your history. If you have
a favorite for a site and the favicon is missing just delete the favorite,
visit the site and add it to your list of favorites. The favicon will be
recreated. Mission accomplished.

When I search "my computer" for favicon.ico there isn't one. Even
immediately after adding to my favorites.

I have a folder called C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Temporary Internet Files but no
favicon.ico listed.
This is the only folder I get when I search "my computer" for Temporary

In Windows Explorer select Tools, Folder Options, View, under Hidden files
enable "Show all files". Now look again.

Details? How are you trying to do that?
I just did right-click, Save Picture As...

Yes it will, provided you leave the .ico extension on it.

Good luck

Would you try the one at the link I provided? I have been able to save
the one at Google and a few other places by going to the favicon
directory on the web, but for some reason this one does not work.

Also, I have searched my hard drive for favicon.ico and none show up.
I have my view settings set to show hidden files.

It worked fine. Did you try the rightclick, Save *Picture* As... item?

That may not work for searching the TIF folder...
Hmm... in fact, it does! (Wow.) And you can identify the favicon.ico
file you want to copy by its icon or at least by the tooltip which shows
the originating URL. Neat.

The simplest way to do that is to open the TIF Viewer.
Keystrokes: Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V and then press F3 in the resulting
Explorer window. Then what I think happens is that the Search Companion
window is allowing you to search within the TIF Name field for favicon.ico

So then once you have them listed there you can just drag them
to another Explorer window open where you want to save them.
Etc.

BTW there is something wrong with your Google editor.
Somehow my quotes ended up being quoted with yours.
I have repaired two of the most misleading cases.

Terry: Your cache (aka TIF) may be full. Clear your cache then visit:
http://dictionary.reference.com/favicon.ico then search drive C: for
favicon*.*

On Windows 2000, and possibly on Windoes XP, the Serach function will not
serach into folders which have the hidden attribute. The "Local Settings"
folder in which the TIF folder is located typically has this attribute
set. To get around this, start the search in the TIF folder.

The OP was advised in a previous post that he needed to set view to include
hidden and system files. Are you saying that with that view setting he still
couldn't find files in those folders?

The search function on Win2K will not move into those folders regardless
of the view setting. On WinXP, it will do so only if you check the
"Search system folders" option under "Advanced" in the search window.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Here's a link explaining how to
accomplish this task in all versions of Windows:

Unfortunately OP never specified his OS and my mind reading skills are
lacking.
