Windows XP Faulty PC ?

Hi Guys,
I wonder if you could help.I have a problem with my PC-every time i start it up it says 'invalid settings in the MSDOS.SYS file'about a thousand times all the way down the screen also with squiggles and faces(space invader) with noises from the PC itself.The Pc works ok for a while and will then freeze.I have tried to use my rescue discs but I cannot access DOS program and it says it has performed an illegal operation and will close.I have run virus check and no problems found scanned hard disc - no problems.Whats wrong:confused: :crazy:.PC is Dell Dimension 8100 1.7 Intell Pentium chip Windows ME OS.
 
You can open MSDOS.SYS in Notepad - it is essential it is the right size as detailed in the file.

Re-install Windows over the top of itself ... you have a corrupted MSDOS.SYS file.
