My laptop (ACER TravelMate 4070), won't power-down.

Start, Turn Off Computer - results in the screen greying but when I
click TurnOff or Restart the screen gets it's colour back.

Task Manager, Shutdown - does nothing - whether I click the Turn Off,
Restart, Hibernate, or Stand by options.

Configuring the Acer Power Management, advanced settings, Load
defautls to "Load" seems to DO NOTHING either.

Setting Acer Power Management, advanced settings, Power Button and
Password:

"When I press the power button: Shut Down" doesn't work either.
Nothing happens when I press the power button.

"When I close the lid: Stand-By" seems to work - as the battery was
near 100% after 2.5 days of inactivity over the weekend.

Is this a hardware fault or could there possibly be some software and
bad configuration messing things up?

Seems likely to be software - virus related perhaps, given that it occurs so
early in the shutdown procedure. Does a hard-shut down work (holding the
power button for several seconds usually - but check your manuals)?

You could try booting from an Ubuntu or Knoppix live cd and then doing
shutdown from there. This would clarify if it is hardware or software
related.

Could be either. The best way to check that is to image the
system, do a restore, see if the problem persists after the restore.
