Help please: Have a Dell laptop with XP installed. Everything is fine until
Norton antivirus is renewed...right after renewal complete, now the computer
blips fatal error and shuts down. Nothing works until we do a complete
system restore - wiping out and reinstalling xp (now up to a daily
requirement). Just before Norton was renewed, a virus was found and norton
'isolated' it, then requested to be renewed. Dell does not ship with the
windows cd, it is installed on the computer hard drive. I am not sure
whether to uninstall norton or do we have another issue here???

Hello GatorOdie and good morning!

These are only suggestions but you can try them. First go to
www.support.dell.com and click on Technical Support. Enter your Service Tag
in the box and then click GO. Click on Drivers and Downloads and a list will
come up with all of the Drivers and Downloads for your computer.

The top is Applications and next to it will be the File Type Category with
Dell Support 3.2 Download this and when finished there will be a small
blue/orange icon with the Dell slanted E logo in your system tray where the
clock is located. Left click and there will be some options and you want to
select check now. After the check completes there MAY be some other pages
available in the box. If so there will be a more comprehensive PC Checkup
available which will give you an option of "more details" so click on this.

What you want is to eventually add is at www.pccheckup.dellfix.com and this
will take a bit to download and eventually there will be a "check now" blue
link with a picture of a woman. Run the test and it will analyze your
computer and if anything is amiss there will be an option to "fix now" which
you can click on and it will repair the issue. There may be more than one.

There is also a third PC Check available for a thirty day free trial that
you will find on one of the pages from the small icon in the system tray
initially or in a couple of days. The trial suggests running it once a week
but I run it last everyday before I shut down.

Leave the Norton installed until you run these checks and the pccheckup may
fix it for you.

Call Technical Support at 800-822-8965 and inform the Technician that you
need the Resource CD's for your computer. If it is a Latitude the extension
is 7243891, otherwise you will have to listen to the menu for your model. I
do not know why but the Operating System and Diagnostics and Drivers CD's
always came with a new system but apparently Dell has changed their protocol.

These are free so confirm this with the technician.

I am hopeful that this will help you but you may have to uninstall the
Norton at some point and contact them.

Take care.

Mark
