Open My Computer, right-click the grey header line beyond the list of
drives (where you can change the sorting of the list). Select "File
System".

Run Checkdisk at the command prompt.

Start|Run|Type cmd |OK

At the prompt, type chkdsk c: /f Press enter, then (Y)es, enter. Reboot.

Change driver letters as required. ie change the c: to d: if you have more
than one partition. The space in chkdsk c: /f is a single space.
The information on the screen will indicate which file system you are using.

That's a lot of steps. Really, all you need to do is click on My Computer,
then right click on the hard drive icon for the drive of interest and select
Properties.

If it's new from Dell it's NTFS.

Leonard,

Open My Computer and right-click a drive and choose Properties. The General tab displays the File system. Do this for all the partitions, as some OEMs have C:\ drive formatted as NTFS and the other drives as FAT32. (like in Compaq units)
