Can you tell me what Fat type XP should use to format a
16Mb compact flash. Also some flashcards will format on an
XP machine but can not be read on a 98/95 system, why?

I would recommend formating the card in the camera or
reader it will be used in and letting it choose. Fat12
is the norm for some of the older/smaller cards

XP can not format a FAT type other than FAT32, which may not be supported by
the compact flashcard.

Most CF cards under 1GB are Fat16 out of the box. Some cameras use
Fat12 (Olympus?). The safest formatting is done in the camera.
